Working hard for Equal Justice, including the equal worth and dignity of all humans, is the heart and soul of our Firm. We have all seen with our own eyes how unequal justice is in our country for black Americans and other people of color. All of us have a moral and human obligation to seize the current moment and turn it into irresistible momentum for true racial justice in Maine, the US, and the globe.
JWY is already doing a lot but we can and should do more. We are currently pursuing ideas and input on what we should do at this critical stage for bending the arc of the moral universe toward justice.
We are announcing two small but important actions we are taking.
First, JWY has made a $2,000 contribution to the Black Lives Matter Portland bail fund: https://www.gofundme.com/f/portland-blm-bail-fund.
Supporting Black Lives Matter in Maine is one of the best ways to make change happen now and here in Maine.
Second, our Firm is honoring Juneteenth (June 19) as a paid holiday. Juneteenth is as important as the July 4 Holiday because it marks the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, enslaved black people in Texas learned that the Civil War had ended and that they were free. We hope this holiday will provide an opportunity for all of us to take specific actions to end racism and reach equal justice for all.
